'Ghost Whisperer' put CBS on top Friday

That dream team of "Ghost Whisperer" and "Medium" bolstered CBS to several victories Friday night. ("Medium" star Patricia Arquette and "Ghost Whisperer" star Jennifer Love Hewitt are pictured at the Emmys.) The Eye Network had the most viewers and the biggest share of the 18-to-49 audience.

At 8 p.m., "Ghost Whisperer" scared 8.6 million. NBC's "Law & Order" ran second with 6.3 million viewers. A repeat of ABC's "FlashForward," which premiered Thursday, ran third with 4.5 million viewers.

At 9, "Medium" pulled in 8.8 million fans, according to preliminary numbers released this morning. A distant second was NBC's "Dateline" on Michael Jackson with 5.8 million viewers. ABC repeated the premieres of "Modern Family" (4.3 million) and "Cougar Town" (4.2 million).
At 10, CBS had the biggest audience with "Numb3rs" drawing 7.9 million. ABC's "20/20" attracted 7.1 million, but was more popular in the 18-to-49 age group. "The Jay Leno Show" amused 5.7 million for NBC.
It was a rough night for Fox: The sitcom "Brothers" entertained just 2.8 million, and "Dollhouse" returned to find only 2.6 million fans.

On The CW, "Smallville" switched to Fridays and found 2.5 million admirers. (Might it be better to air that show earlier in the week?) A repeat of "America's Next Top Model" pulled in 1.2 million.

For the night, CBS averaged 8.4 million viewers in prime time. I have preliminary numbers for these broadcast networks: NBC with 5.9 million, ABC with 5.3 million, Fox with 2.7 million and The CW with 1.8 million.

Smallville's Latest Guest-Star Promises Time-Travel Hi-Jinks

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a brand new Jor-El, appearing in the new season of Smallville and messing up continuity and what the show's about more than ever before. Spoilers!

According to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, Julian Sands has signed on to appear in the CW series as a time-tossed version of Kal-El's father appearing in modern day Smallville alongside new villain Zod. Apparently, the November (ie, sweeps) episode "Kandor" - named for the city from Krypton that was stolen by Brainiac in the comics, and the possibly-still-existant city that Kara left Earth to find in Smallville, for those looking for clues - will reveal that Jor-El was one of the Kryptonians brought to Earth with Zod at the end of last season, potentially confusing the timeline leading to Kal's birth and launching the series into a new Back To The Future direction, at least for one episode. Here's hoping we get to see Tom Welling pull off a great Michael J. Fox impression in the process.

Tom Welling in early Superman outfit

Superman is on his way, as the final season of Smallville approaches...

In advance of the ninth and final season of Smallvile, The CW has released the first shot of Tom Welling wearing a form of the Superman costume. Season nine kicks off in the States at the end of the month, and has the added bonus of bringing in General Zod - now played by Callum Blue - as a regular character. Can the writers resist the iconic "Kneel before Zod" line? We know we couldn't. We suspect that's one of a combination of reasons why we don't write Smallville episodes for a living.

But back to the point. The outfit is clearly some way away from the red pants over blue tights look that's obviously synonymous with the Man of Steel, but Welling nonetheless is portraying a version of the character that's some way off the finished article.
Smallville returns on 25th September.
